MEMORIZE A LIST OF ITEMS IN TWO STEPS

By CM Lim

I had the good fortune of learning a fine memory technique over the radio, it was some 15 years ago and I can still recall things I'd committed to mind using the memory technique.

It is easy to understand and before dwelling into the nuts and bolts

Relax and enjoy a story...

A Big Brown Bear comes up to a Maple tree
It plucks out a Maple Leaf and hold it high to marvel at,
a Chinese Dragon swoop down from behind, snags the leaf and fly off to the sky
As it soars, the dragon turns into a Bald Eagle and flap away.
The eagle reaches the statue of Christ the Redeemer and landed on one of its open
palms
where a smiling Kangaroo stood just right beside
brandishing a Cricket Bat,
The eagle immediately transforms itself into a Football owned by Maradona, and the Kangaroo swiftly hits that football off with the cricket bat.
As the football shot out, it turns yet again back to an Eagle, flying towards a Sun with 32 Rays.
Beneath is a desert, stood 10 Fennec Foxes stretching their huge floppy ears wide listening, they know the eagle is coming...

The End

A bizarre story with an abrupt end, if you had followed this far though, you would be pleased to know that you are about to make yourself remember the

10 BIGGEST COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD

in order of size.

let's walk through the story one more time and find out how...

1. RUSSIA
A Big Brown Bear comes up to a Maple tree - Big Brown Bear is widely associated with Russia, the largest country in the world.

2. CANADA

It plucks out a Maple Leaf and holds it high to marvel at - Maple leaf a symbol of Canada, 2nd largest.

3. CHINA

10. ALGERIA

Beneath is a desert, stood 10 Fennec Foxes stretching their huge floppy ears wide listening, Fennec Fox is the national animal of Algeria, 10th largest country in the world.

Two Steps procedure

The above self-explanatory memory technique is a simple Two Steps procedure,

1. Link Objects wishes to remember to a bizarre story. The more bizarre or ridiculous the story is, the more it makes for interesting and easy remembering.

2. Play out the story in your mind. This critical part etches the story indelibly into one's memory.

For the above example, the Countries are the Objects to remember, which in itself is difficult to visualized, like how do I remember Russia or Kazakhstan as a country so to speak, in this instance, associating a relevant object to the Country e.g. Big Brown Bear which is a natural association to Russia helps connect and make remembering the Country a breeze.

SUMMARY

This memory technique is a great tool to help remember things, but don't confuse it with increasing one's memory power, it doesn't help me to step up on my memory capacity, I am still as forgetful, I merely found a way, a tool to store what I want to remember effectively.

I wish above memory technique can serve as a one size fits all solution to remembering everything and of course it's plain wishful thinking, one would require different approaches in remembering different subject nature like Phone Numbers or Dates which are difficult to visualize as objects.
Fortunately, there is no shortage of techniques and can easily be found on the web, just google "memory techniques".
